Testosterone Reference Ranges by Age

Standard lab “normal” ranges identify the bottom 2.5% of men — not optimized men. Performance targets reflect what most high-functioning men need to feel and operate at their best.

From Coach Terrence: I’ve worked with men who feel terrible at 600 ng/dL and others who thrive at 450 ng/dL. Optimize for your symptoms — not a reference range.

What Is a Testosterone Level Calculator?

A testosterone level calculator uses validated clinical questions to assess your likelihood of experiencing androgen deficiency — commonly called low testosterone or “low T.” This tool is based on the Androgen Deficiency in Aging Males (ADAM) questionnaire, one of the most widely used screening instruments in men’s hormone health.

Unlike a blood test, a symptom-based calculator helps you determine whether your symptoms warrant further investigation. It is the first step in a clinical decision-making process — not a replacement for blood work.

How the Score Is Calculated

This calculator uses a weighted symptom scoring system. Symptoms most closely associated with testosterone deficiency — decreased libido and erectile dysfunction — are weighted at 3 points each. Secondary symptoms like fatigue, mood changes, and declining strength are 2 points each. Supporting symptoms such as brain fog and increased body fat receive 1 point each. A total score of 8 or above, or the presence of either primary symptom, indicates further hormone evaluation is clinically appropriate.

Normal Testosterone Levels by Age

Testosterone declines roughly 1–2% per year after age 30. Standard lab reference ranges reflect population averages — being “in range” only means you are not in the bottom 2.5% of the male population. It says nothing about whether your levels support peak performance, cognitive function, or physical health.

Clinical Reference: The Endocrine Society defines hypogonadism as total testosterone below 300 ng/dL with symptoms. Most performance-focused clinicians target 500–800 ng/dL depending on age and individual factors.

Natural Ways to Optimize Testosterone

  • Sleep: 7–9 hours per night. Poor sleep reduces testosterone 10–15% per night of deprivation. Cool, dark room (65–68°F).
  • Body composition: Excess body fat increases aromatase activity, converting testosterone to estrogen. Target under 20% body fat.
  • Resistance training: Heavy compound lifts 3–4x per week. Chronic endurance training suppresses testosterone.
  • Nutrition: 30–40% of daily calories from healthy fats. Zinc-rich foods. Minimize alcohol.
  • Stress management: Chronic cortisol directly suppresses testosterone. Breathwork, meditation, and deliberate recovery are clinical interventions.

Important: These symptoms can originate from thyroid dysfunction, sleep apnea, depression, or vitamin D deficiency — not just low testosterone. Blood work is the only way to identify the true cause.
